Fantasy Starters Week Five

Mark Sanchez – Sanchez takes on the Minnesota Vikings’ defense after showing that he can be an efficient, mistake-free quarterback. He hasn’t thrown an interception so far, and even though he’s going up against a tough defense, he’s got the weapons to have another solid game. Wide receiver Braylon Edwards has shown that he can still be effective, and Dustin Keller has become one of the best tight ends in the game. The Jets will also have wide receiver Santonio Holmes starting this week, which should open up the offense more.

Carson Palmer – After sub-par performances in weeks two and three, Palmer threw for 371 yards and two touchdowns in the Cincinnati Bengals’ loss to the Cleveland Browns in week four. Look for Palmer to put up similar numbers this week against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Against Cleveland, wide receiver Terrell Owens had over 200 receiving yards, showing that he is still a threat. If Palmer has found chemistry with T.O., and can still sling the ball to wide receiver Chad Ochocinco and his other weapons, he should have another great game this weekend.

Donovan McNabb- The Washington Redskins play the Green Bay Packers in week five, and McNabb should break out of his streak of average performances. He put up only 125 passing yards against the Philadelphia Eagles in week four, but can have a good game against the Packers. Though Green Bay ranks seventh in pass defense, they gave up 331 yards to Detroit Lions quarterback Shaun Hill in week four. McNabb has the talent and weapons to throw for 300+ yards this weekend as well.

Jamaal Charles – Though he’s only had 34 rushes, Charles is averaging seven yards per carry so far. The Kansas City Chiefs play the Indianapolis Colts this weekend, who are 29th in the league in rush defense. Though running back Thomas Jones has gotten the bulk of the carries this season, Charles’ explosiveness will help him and the Chiefs run through the Colts’ defense.

Tim Hightower – The Arizona Cardinals host the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, and Hightower should have a big day after his team got blown out by the San Diego Chargers in week four. Hightower averages 5.5 yards per rush, and the Saints’ defense struggles to stop the run. We had Carolina Panthers’ running back DeAngelo Williams on the week four start ‘em list for the same reason, and he had a solid game against the Saints. Hightower should do the same.

Matt Forte – When the Chicago Bears play the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, Todd Collins will be starting for Chicago, according to reports. That means that Forte should be the go-to guy for the offense, and he’s got the ability to be that guy. He’s had a tough year on the ground so far, but leads the Bears in receptions with 16, which means he can get you points on the ground and through the air.

Brandon Pettigrew – The Detroit Lions’ tight end leads the team in receiving, and should be a safe target for quarterback Shaun Hill when the Lions play the St. Louis Rams on Sunday. Though Pettigrew doesn’t have a touchdown catch yet, that can change quickly because he’s a big guy who can be a great redzone weapon. He’s coming off an eight-catch, 91-yard game against Green Bay, and should put up more good numbers against the Rams.

Derrick Mason – Mason is the most reliable target on the Baltimore Ravens’ offense, and has been doing it for years. Though wide receiver Anquan Boldin is the Ravens’ receiving leader, Mason has seen his reception totals go up with every game so far this year, and against a Denver Broncos’ defense that has a below-average pass defense, Mason should continue to see his stats rise.

Lance Moore – Of all the weapons the New Orleans Saints have on offense, it’s Moore who’s leading the team in receiving yards and touchdowns. He’s fourth on the team with 14 catches, but has a 14.9 yards per catch average, which is tops on the team. Though anyone can have a big day for the Saints, most of their weapons put up pretty consistent numbers once they become a key part of the offense. Moore has done that this year. Look for quarterback Drew Brees to stretch the Cardinals’ defense with deep throws to Moore.

Week Four Spread Picks

Thursday, 30 September, 2010

By Zack Cimini

We had another week of above .500 selections going 9-7. There were a few games that went awry in the fourth quarter for us, or it could have been a fabulous week. With four bye week teams over the next few months, Sundays selection of games dwindles down from sixteen to fourteen. This weeks games feature a lot of tough spreads. Take a look at who were rolling with for winners.

Last Weeks Record: 9-7
Overall Record: 25-21-2

Tennessee -6.5- Broncos lost a tough one this past week. Tennessee hasn’t looked well at all and are winning games. They’ll shake off their rust and get things going with a big win.

Pittsburgh -1- With Ray Rice likely out or limited the Steelers will force the Ravens to beat them through the air. Flacco is going to make some big plays but will neutralize that with his mistakes.

Cleveland +3- Carson Palmer talks will finally begin after this one. How discussion hasn’t is beyond me.

Green Bay -14.5- Packers will blow out the Lions and get a dominant bounce back win.

New Orleans-13.5- The media has been on the Saints more than ever. They have not been clicking in their usual patented rhythm. Nothing like a Carolina matchup to settle that talk.

San Francisco +6.5- Were sensing a first half bad start by the Falcons. They’re coming off an emotional overtime win against the former Super Bowl champs. Facing an 0-3 team that has their backs against the wall. San Francisco jumps out early and possibly pulls out the win.

St. Louis -1- Not even a game to think about putting money on. We’ll take the home team.

NY Jets -5- Look for Shonn Greene to official start his season.

San Diego -8- The Cardinals have done a complete 360 in the wrong way as an organization. Last week should have been a demoralizing loss at home. The defense let the Raiders march up and down the field with ease. Philip Rivers is going to have a field day in this one.

Indianapolis -7- This is the type of road blowout win that gets the front office in a frenzy. They’ll look at making some decision making changes in their front office and on the field.

Oakland +3- The Raiders handed the Cardinals a win last week. Gradkowski starting was the right decision by Tom Cable. He is moving the offense with ease. They just need to capitalize and take advantage of red zone trips.

Washington +5.5- Just envision this game coming down to the fourth quarter and a last minute game winning field goal.

New York Giants -4- The Giants offensively have played about as bad as they possibly can. Without the turnovers we’d be talking about them in a totally different light. Things have to finally calm down for them on a turnover basis.

New England -1- Miami’s pass defense was exposed by Mark Sanchez. Brady is counting down the time before this game starts. He has two new options emerging at tight end and the same force at receiver. Big day for the Patriots offense.

NFL: Week Three Spread Picks

Underdogs must be taken if you plan on making a profit on Sundays. Last week showcased that as some teams came back and saw favored teams lose in gut wrenching fashion. Detroit and San Francisco were the big disruptors in week two. In college football it’s called the backdoor cover, and that’s exactly what those two teams did.

Week three provides a fresh new plate of spreads to devour. Don’t rush or you could end up with that woozy feeling Monday morning.

Overall: 16-14-2

Last week: 7-8-1

Week Three Selections

NY Giants -3 – The Giants should be favored more in this if it weren’t for the Colts embarrassing them in a prime time game. Tennessee is headed for another poor start just like last season.

Buffalo +14- Buffalo was hanging around with the Packers for quite awhile last week. Expect the Bills to manage the clock and get just a tad bit better boost with Ryan Fitzpatrick. That boost should be enough to put up 10-17 points and cover a 27-17 loss.

Cleveland +10.5- The old rivalry usually brings a decent game. Ray Rice has struggled while the Browns defense has done a good job at keeping teams in check offensively.

Pittsburgh -2- Those rookie miscues and mistakes from a year ago will flare back up for Josh Freeman in this one.

Cincinnati -3- A let down here by Cincinnati could be that game that they flash back to in week seventeen.

New Orleans -4- Even in a blowout last week Matt Ryan doesn’t have that same look he did as a rookie. New Orleans will get that offense rolling after all talks being that they’re not looking as potent as last year.

San Francisco -2.5- At 0-2 and in a must win situation San Francisco has to travel to a very tough road environment. The mistakes of Monday Night get handled and San Francisco coasts to a win.

Minnesota -11- This will be the AP show sparked by a defensive touchdown as well.

Dallas +3- If the Cowboys lose this game, we’d like to see Jerry Jones firing press conference right after the game. Not on Monday.

Washington -3.5- A week away from facing his old team. You don’t think McNabb wants one more air it out tune up before that?

Philadelphia -3- Jacksonville has the worst attendance in the league. After so many neck and neck years with the Colts, they are a franchise heading to the bottom of their division.

Denver +5.5- There’s something brewing with this Broncos team. They don’t have really any big names but are playing so efficient. Hmmm, sounds like the Patriots nucleus of winning ways.

San Diego -5.5- This will be the sportscenter highlight reel that shows two Chargers touchdowns and the stats of a blowout.

Oakland +4.5- With Gradkowski the starter the Raiders will score some points. Darren McFadden is quietly being the front runner in the AFC in rushing. Derek Anderson has shown no ability to get the Cardinals from point a to point b on any series.

Miami -1.5- Jets/Dolphins is a classic game to always watch. Jason Taylor will be having the Jets defense fired up. We have a feeling though, Tony Sparano learned his lesson last year when the Jets shut down the wildcat and ground attack. They’ll be ready to throw the ball with Revis dinged up and will utilize that hefty contract and showcase Brandon Marshall.

Chicago +3- The Bears know that the Packers are the talk of their division, the NFC, and the Super Bowl. This is their chance to bring it on Monday Night football and make it known the Packers are not coasting to a division title.
