Players Of The Week

Wednesday, 10 September, 2003

By Zack Cimini
Notjustagame.com

This was the week of wide receivers when it comes to fantasy football, and a big disappointment for the running backs. It was also one of the most interesting week one?s in a long time from a game perspective. Don?t get too into the results of week one. We all know how many times a team will start 2-0, and than fall flat on their face. By the end of September we should see who the true contenders are in both conferences. One thing that is evident is that the talent level is pretty even out there. Free agency and the salary cap have really made a huge impact on the game. Well here is a breakdown of the top players of the week.

Top 10 Players Of The Week

1. Priest Holmes
You have to hand it to Holmes. He got his new contract, and earned his money in week one. He is just the perfect fit to the Chiefs offense, and no one can stop him. He is on pace to get well over 2,000 all purpose yards.

2. Anquan Boldin
It?s not often a receiver catches ten passes for over two hundred yards, let alone a rookie in his very first game. His talent is unbelievable, and his moves he put on were even better. Start laying the odds down that Boldin won?t be a Cardinal in three years.

3. Randy Moss
Moss answered a lot of critic?s questions, and showed that he is ready to go this season.

4. Clinton Portis
Portis pretty much won the game for the Broncos, because Jake Plummer didn?t provide anything. The way he keeps bouncing off players and keeps going at his size is amazing.

5. Jeff Blake
He was by far the best quarterback in week one, and shows that he still has it. People forget that Blake has had success, wherever he goes.

6. Travis Henry
Yes he did fumble the football, but he also had two rushing touchdowns. In a week where running backs did nothing, he provided a big boost to your fantasy football team.

7. Chris Chambers
He was the only bright spot for Miami, and had two spectacular touchdowns. This might be the year that Chambers cracks into the top fifteen overall.

8. Hines Ward
He is probably the best possession receiver in the league. He is turning into a Cris Carter, because all he does is catches touchdowns.

9. Stephen Davis
He was able to run all over Jacksonville, even when Rodney Peete was in the game. The Redskins are really going to regret letting him go.

10. Joe Jurevicious
He didn?t have the big stats, but his two catches put him in the top ten for this week.

Top Five Defenses

1. Buffalo
From where they were last to now, is spectacular. The Patriots offense has always thrown all over the Bills, but not this time around.

2. Kansas City
No one thought the Chiefs would be able to shut down Tomlinson, and Boston. Guess what, they did both.

3. New York Giants
The Giants just made the Rams offense look horrible.

4. Tampa Bay
Yet another shutout for this team, I guess that is expected nowadays.

5. Houston
The Dolphins did some things to their defense, but their defense created three turnovers and setup the game winning field goal for the Texans.

Special Teams Player Of The Week

Edward Drummond: He really turned this game around for Detroit with his punt return. He did the exact same thing to the Cardinals last season.

League Info and More

by Zack Cimini
NOTJUSTAGAME.com

In this article we will breakdown all different types of topics. Including the Rams quarterback situation, green bay?s wide receivers, and who is worth picking up on the waiver wire.

When is the last time Kurt Warner has been himself on the field? The answer to that is probably their Super Bowl lost a couple of seasons ago. Mike Martz is coaching like he wants to lose his job, and is making horrible decisions on the field. First, he keeps Warner in the whole game with a mild concussion, and now he decides to bench him this week. If Martz was paying any attention, he would have saw that Warner played very well in the second half.

Now, Marc Bulger will probably have a great game this week, and all kinds of trouble will start in St. Louis. I think Martz should have waited until the doctors diagnosed Warner?s concussion, instead of naming Bulger the starter on Monday. That type of move is only going to cause team problems.

If you look on the bright side, maybe this move will force Martz to use Marshall Faulk more. He has the best running back in the league, and didn?t even use him week one. With Marc Bulger in there, Faulk should receive plenty of carries and passes thrown to him.

Who knows what is going on in Green Bay. Brett Favre had an absolutely horrible game, and three of their receivers were hurt. Donald Driver, Robert Ferguson, and Karsten Bailey were all hurt in week one?s action. They?re hurting so bad that the Packers are looking into bringing back Antonio Freeman. Javon Walker is a definite start in your leagues, until their receivers are healthy.

How about that Arizona Cardinals offense? If their offense can play like that, they might be able to keep up with St. Louis, San Francisco, and Seattle. One thing is for sure, is that their defense is going to lose them a lot of games. Jeff Blake and Anquan Boldin probably won?t put up a game close to week one?s performance again, but should definitely be considered. Blake could be a solid backup quarterback, and Boldin a nice option at fourth or fifth wide receiver.

Joe Jurevicious isn?t to be considered as a starter, but more of a bye week option. He puts up tight end player type of numbers, and should get around eight touchdowns this season. Besides Jeff Blake, Jake Delhomme also deserves a solid look, after his great comeback for the Carolina Panthers this week.

Team Rankings Week 1

Wednesday, 10 September, 2003

By Zack Cimini
Notjustagame.com

It wasn?t a pretty week for a lot of NFL teams, here are the new rankings after week 1.

1. Tampa Bay
A lot of people expected them to lose. They proved everyone wrong, and made a statement that they won?t give up their title easily.

2. Buffalo
Notjustagame.com told you that Buffalo was the best team in the AFC. Their defense won?t play this well every week, but anything is an upgrade from last year. Buffalo looks light years ahead of their fellow AFC East teams.

3. Tennessee
The Titans never win their games pretty, but they always win.

4. Kansas City
It?s the same thing for Kansas City as it is for Buffalo. Last year the Chiefs defense lost them games, not their offense.

5. Minnesota
If Daunte Culpepper can limit his turnovers, this team will stay in the top ten all season long.

6. Seattle
Shaun Alexander has to be very thankful for that offensive line.

7. Indianapolis
It looks like Tony Dungy has done another reversal. All of the sudden the Colts turned into a defensive team. Yeah right, expect Manning and Harrison to get back to their usual routine.

8. Denver
Like usual, Jake Plummer looked awful. Good thing that the Broncos have Clinton Portis.

9. Philadelphia
They still have major concerns at running back and wide receiver. Donovan McNabb has always carried this team anyways.

10. Pittsburgh
It was a great win for the Steelers, we?ll see if they can stay consistent.

11. Oakland
It was a tough week one matchup for the Raiders.

12. New York Giants
The Giants have plenty of talent to put up a fight against the Buccaneers

13. San Francisco
What?s wrong with Jeff Garcia?s back?

14. Atlanta
All Doug Johnson has to do is hang in there for four more games.

15. St. Louis
After playing that bad, can you believe they only lost by ten points? Don?t expect a repeat of last year?s bad start.

16. Washington
Their win wasn?t impressive, but it was a win.

17. Miami
The Dolphin fell the most of any team, and should be number 31. Maybe a slow start, will reverse the way they finish a season.

18. Carolina
Carolina is a very dangerous team. Stephen Davis is a top ten running back, along with a solid group of receivers, and a new solid quarterback in Jake Delhomme. They also have that defense that keeps them in every game.

19. Detroit
This will probably be the highest the Lions get all year long.

20. Houston Texans
Give them another year or two, and they could be a serious threat to challenge for a playoff spot.

21. Cleveland
Kelly Holcomb had a very rough start, but the Browns should be okay.

22. Baltimore
What happened to the Ravens great defense?

23. Jacksonville
Brunell showed that he still can play at a high level.

24. Dallas
Quincy Carter is the most erratic quarterback in the league. One moment he looks great, and the next looks like an NFL Europe quarterback.

25. New England
If you read the ?Quarterback Article?, you would have saw that we had Tom Brady as our bust quarterback of the year. He should bounce back, but like we said don?t expect big numbers from him.

26. Green Bay
Favre definitely doesn?t want to finish his last season with a horrible year.

27. New York Jets
Both the Dolphins and Jets played horrible, and one of them is going to have to continue that streak this week.

28. Arizona
Their offense looked great, and will do even better if Emmitt Smith gets more carries. Their defense is the big problem though.

29. San Diego
They also have tons of talent, but are going to have a tough time winning games.

30. Cincinnati
They?ll be on the bottom all season.

31. New Orleans
They were horrible down the stretch last season, and haven?t changed one bit. They have too much talent to be playing like this.

32. Chicago
They are by far the worst team in football.

JETS Look Horrible

Sunday, 7 September, 2003

By Zack Cimini
notjustagame.com

J-E-T-S, JETS, JETS, JETS. The Jets needed about fifty real jets on Thursday after that performance. Vinny Testaverde looked awful, and if that continues the Jets will be one of the worst teams in the whole league.

You know how they say, ?a loss goes fully on the quarterback?? Well, I?ve never seen a case more evident than this game. Testaverde did absolutely nothing for the Jets offense. He looked like he was a scared rookie, instead of playing like a veteran. A junior high school kid could have thrown the passes he was attempting.

The Jets defense started off bad, but than shut down the Redskins offense. Their defensive line was outstanding, and put tremendous pressure on Ramsey. The offense had many chances to take over the game, and just couldn?t get it done. As a matter of fact, all it would have taken was one solid drive.

We all know the Redskins defense isn?t as good as Vinny Testaverde made it look. If Testaverde continues to play this way, it?ll make it extremely easy for defenses. They?ll just zero in on Curtis Martin, and force Testaverde to beat them.

A short passing game is nice, but you have to shake up the defense every once in awhile. Testaverde didn?t even attempt a pass over 20 yards, and only averaged 4.8 yards a pass. That?s the kind of average you hope to get from your running game, not passing game.

Testaverde is the type of player that can shake off this type of performance, but the Jets fans aren?t. Another week or two of this, and Jets fans will be going crazy. It is all up to Testaverde, because the talent is still there. In Santana Moss?s brief action of touching the ball he had a great punt return, Curtis Conway also looked solid on a couple of catches. I?d expect the Jets offensive coordinator, to call a few deep pass plays on the Jets first offensive series next week. Maybe it?ll be some sort of flee flicker, just to get Testaverde?s confidence up. If you think Washington?s defense tore up Testaverde, just wait and see what Miami?s defense will do to him.

In the AFC East there isn?t any time to go on a losing streak, especially in the first month of the season. Buffalo, New England, and Miami are all going to challenge for the title, and the Jets are looking like they?ll be very far behind them. You have to give Chad Pennington credit, because he really does make a difference in the Jets new system. The Jets are just hoping they aren?t 0-5, by the time he makes his comeback.

Week One Preview and Predictions

Week One
By Zack Cimini

It?s finally time to play meaningful NFL football games. The season even starts on a Thursday, for football fans that can?t wait until Sunday. Week one in the NFL is often one of the craziest weeks. NFL teams don?t play at a high level, and that leads to a lot of upsets. That?s what is so great about the NFL. A team will look solid in the first couple of weeks, and then they go on a six game losing streak. The reason why is because the talented NFL teams finally start playing to their abilities.

The matchups for this week are some of the best I?ve ever seen on week one. It?s going to be a tough week for people that do weekly picks. The only two games that look like sure wins are Denver over Cincinnati, and Miami over the Texans. All the rest are very tough matchups. Here will break down each matchup for week one of the NFL season.

NY Jets vs. Washington

This is going to be a great game. For one thing it is the first game of the NFL season. Another is that it is just a great matchup. Vinny Testaverde is back in the spotlight, and will have a lot of pressure on him. The Jets are expected to compete for the tough AFC East division title, and have plenty of talent to do it. Washington just has a lot of question marks right now. Patrick Ramsey is a young quarterback, and will go through plenty of struggles. Not to mention that their running back situation is very foggy. Lavernues Coles and Rod Gardner are great young receivers. If it turns into a shootout, the Jets don?t stand a chance.

Winner: Jets

New England vs. Buffalo

You know that the NFL schedule makers did this game on purpose. Drew Bledsoe gets to face his former teammates once again, and that should be a great challenge. Buffalo made some noise last year, and have upgraded tremendously on defense. The Bills arguably have the best overall players at each position on offense. Bledsoe is a poised solid veteran, Travis Henry is a very explosive running back, and Eric Moulds is Mr. Consistent. The only question with their offense is if Josh Reed can fill the void Peerless Price left.

Winner: Bills

Denver vs. Cincinnati

Jake Plummer will have all the opportunities to prove himself week one. For once Cincinnati enters the season with a chance to win five to six games. They have talent, but not enough, and will struggle against all of Denver?s options. How many weeks do you think it?ll take for Carson Palmer to throw his first four-interception game? I give him less than four weeks.

Winner: Broncos

Indianapolis vs. Cleveland

Who can forget how crazy this game was last season. Both of these teams resemble each other so well, that it is unbelievable. Peyton Manning is coming out to prove that the Colts are for real this season, and Kelly Holcomb is trying to show that he deserved to win the job. Manning has one thing that Holcomb doesn?t have though, and that?s Marvin Harrison. Look for the Colts to find a way to win this game.

Winner: Colts

San Diego vs. Kansas City

We?ll finally be able to see Priest Holmes play in a complete game. The Chargers were one of the best teams in football, until they collapsed down the stretch. One of the main reasons was that Ladainian Tomlinson was being used too much. That?s why the Chargers brought in David Boston. At 260 pounds, who knows how many games Boston will be able to play this season. If he can play a whole season, this team has a serious chance to get into the playoffs. Unless LT runs crazy week one, the Chargers won?t be able to win at Arrowhead stadium.

Winner: Chiefs

Houston vs. Miami

How many week one?s has Miami won straight? It?s been awhile since Miami has lost on week one, and that shouldn?t change this year. Ricky Williams will have a lot to prove, after struggling throughout most of the preseason. Miami?s offense doesn?t jump out at you, but for some reason it always looks good in the first month of a season.

Winner: Dolphins

St. Louis vs. New York Giants

It always seems that both of these teams are playing each other. The Giants are one of those teams that struggled through preseason, and that could end up carrying over to week one. St. Louis is ready to go and will show that they are still a very capable team.

Winner: Rams

Baltimore vs. Pittsburgh

The Ravens have a great defense, but Pittsburgh usually finds a way to tear it up. Plaxico Burress and Hines Ward just know how to get open against the Ravens. It?ll be up to them to have great days, because Baltimore?s run defense will shut down Zereoue and the Bus.

Winner: Steelers

Arizona vs. Detroit

Jeff Blake and Emmitt Smith will make their opening debut against the Lions. Both of these teams have already been hit hard with preseason injuries. The Cardinals lost Duane Starks for the season, and the Lions lost James Stewart. Arizona went 4-0 in the preseason, and have enough talent to win this game in Detroit.

Winner: Cardinals

Minnesota vs. Green Bay

Brett Favre and the Packers went on a complete down slide towards the end of last season. The nucleus of the team is still there, and it?s opening day at Lambeau field. The Vikings finished off the season strong, and their season will ride on Daunte Culpepper once again. If he can play to his ability this team can be one of the best in the NFC. This is a tough game, but you have to go with Green Bay at home.

Winner: Packers

Jacksonville vs. Carolina

With Jimmy Smith out for four weeks, the Jaguars are going to be in serious trouble. Mark Brunell has struggled to find any other target besides Smith his entire career. Keenan McCardell use to put up decent numbers, but Jimmy Smith has been the main guy. The Panthers defense is very tough, and so is Jacksonville?s. This game will be up to both of the stud running backs. Fred Taylor vs. Stephen Davis, whoever does the best will win this game.

Winner: Jaguars

Chicago vs. San Francisco

Chicago has absolutely no running game, and Kordell Stewart for their quarterback. Stewart is out to prove that he still has it, and this will be his last season to prove it. San Francisco should run away with this game, and we should see Terrell Owens first celebration of the year.

Winner: 49ers

New Orleans vs. Seattle

This is one of the toughest matchups of the week. Seattle is a rising team in the NFL, and the Saints have always had the talent. Seattle?s offense is probably the best in the league, and the Saints offense isn?t far behind. This game will be a shootout, and will come down to which defense can make the big play. I?d expect the Saints to find away to pull this one out.

Winner: Seahawks

Atlanta vs. Dallas

All the sudden Dallas?s Quincy Carter has been playing amazing. If he can keep playing up to that ability, Dallas will be a team to be reckoned with. Their defense kept them in plenty of games last year, and they?ve upgraded in that area. Doug Johnson will have a very tough time against the Cowboys defense, and that will result in a Dallas win.

Winner: Cowboys

Oakland vs. Tennessee

Steve McNair looks like a man on a mission this season. Through all the injuries he went through last year, he still carried the Titans to the AFC championship. The Raiders still have tons of options all over the field, but the Titans are going to carry over last season?s anger.

Winner: Titans

Tampa Bay vs. Philadelphia

Last season the Buccaneers ended the talk that they can?t win in cold weather. They won?t have to worry about that on Monday, but they?ll have to worry about a very tough Eagles team. The Eagles looked the best in the preseason, and will have extra motivation just like Tennessee.

Winner: Eagles
